History of Anoka County
Anoka County was organized by an act of the Minnesota Territorial Legislature on May 23, 1857, the year prior to Minnesota's admission to the Union. It was formed from parts of Ramsey County and Benton County; the Rum River previously divided the line between the two counties. The boundaries were mainly the same as they are now, except for a small part of the southeastern tip along the Mississippi River and at the south, formerly known as Manomin County. It was a small portion that connected to Ramsey and occupied one-third of the congressional township. It was then attached to Anoka County by constitutional amendment November 2, 1869. It became known as Fridley in 1879. The first European descendants to explore what is now Anoka County were the Franciscan friar Louis Hennepin and his party in 1680. They reported seeing only prairie grasses and wildflowers. Two hundred years later, solitary trappers hunted in this area. Soon after, more settlers began homesteading here, attracted by fertile land and lumber resources. The first townships were organized in 1851 when Ramsey and Washington Counties were established. Anoka County's townships were organized between 1852-1855 when these frontier communities applied for incorporation into Benton or Ramsey Counties. When Minnesota became a state in 1858, these early settlers petitioned for territorial status for this part of Ramsey County north of the Rum River. This petition was granted and on May 23, 1857. The county seat remained in St. Anthony until settling permanently in Anoka in 1902. Parts of the county were used to form Mille Lacs (1857), Isanti (1858), Kanabec (1870), Chisago (1851) and Pine Counties (1868). Through time, various communities within Anoka County have changed names or disorganized altogether leaving few physical reminders of their existence today. With a few exceptions such as warfare or fire, human presence has altered very little the natural aspects of this county since pre-historic times providing a variety conditions for plants and animals alike which can be found no where else in Minnesota or North America for that matter making this one of it's kind ecosystems worthy of protection now and for future generations to enjoy."
